WIDNES WELCOME USA
In just over one years time, the USA National Rugby League team will set off to create history and participate in their first ever Rugby League World Cup. The RLWC was first held in France in 1954, and the last tournament was hosted in Australia in 2008. New Zealand are the current World Cup Champions.
US League chief David Niu recently visited the UK to be part of Rugby League International Federation meetings along with planning sessions with other member nations and the Rugby League World Cup planning committee. During his visit he was able to meet with hosts for each of the team's matches in Bristol, Wrexham, and Salford as well as spending time with the team's host site at Widnes. The city of Widnes and Borough of Halton are very excited about supporting the American team and a number of promotional activities will commence to engage the local community to get behind the US in their historic run at the RLWC. "The Widnes Vikings Club and the Borough of Halton were incredible hosts when I met with them during my site visit as part of World Cup preparations. From team owner Steve O'Connor, various city officials, to the ladies who run the Widnes RL Museum, I couldn't have been made more welcome. I am certain our team will have a wonderful stay in this great rugby league community, along with forging great friendships with the Widnes Club and the people of the area", enthused Niu.
The US team will be able to prepare at state of the art facilities at Stobart Stadium in Halton, the former site of the famous Naughton Park, home of the Widnes Vikings. Widnes RLFC are one of the founding clubs of rugby league in the north of England, which is an ideal partnership with rugby league in America founded by a hard working team led by David Niu since the mid 90's. The US players will enjoy practising on the I-pitch surface, which they are very familiar with from club games in America being played regularly on artificial turf. Strength and conditioning facilities, along with recreational and hospitality venues are all located in the superb facility.
