UTAH AVALANCHE JOIN THE AMNRL
The American National Rugby League is excited to welcome the Utah Avalanche Rugby League Club to join us in our efforts to develop the sport of rugby league in the USA. The club is located in Salt Lake City, and was formed in January 2011 in an attempt to promote rugby league on the west coast. Led by George Tupou, who has 20+ years of experience in playing and coaching rugby league in Manly, Australia the Avalanche have a fertile base of playing interest and community support similar to the exciting developments in the Hawaiian region.
With the AMNRL club competition now featuring an Atlantic Conference and Pacific Conference, the goal will be to support the Avalanche's growth in the Southeast Region organically through local development programs that promote:
- growing the existing player base
- establishing a solid club culture
- introducing more local clubs
- a schedule with a series of matches within a friendly geographical boundary
The main focus of the Avalanche and the AMNRL in 2011 is to foster the existing player interest by providing immediate game opportunities for local players. With significant support from the local rugby membership and increasing player development led by George, the AMNRL look forward to scheduling games in 2011 featuring established clubs from the AMNRL club competition, along with developing regions such as the Midwest and Pacific.
The Utah Avalanche is proud to announce Sione Kinikini as the inaugural club captain.
"We are really excited about the Avalanche being part of the AMNRL. America is a big place and trying to grow the sport in every area of interest is no easy task. Many of these areas are significant distances apart. It takes a dedicated effort and persistence to meet these challenges. Under the leadership and guidance of George Tupou, I am certain we will establish a major presence for the sport of rugby league in Utah and ultimately the Southwest Region of America. First things first, lets get behind George and the Avalanche and get some games scheduled for them in 2011!"
