USA PLAYER POOL
Date:
01.31.12
The American National Rugby League has released its initial Elite Player Pool for 2012 as it gets set for the coming season and beyond.
All regions across the United States, including those that are home to new expansion teams, are represented in the extensive pool.
Players who are available will go into two mini camps prior to the Donnybrook Cup test match between the USA Tomahawks and Ireland Wolfhounds in Philadelphia on March 17.
Many of the players from the USA’s successful 2011 international campaign are in the pool, along with a host of new names, as well as some older, yet familiar faces.
Among the latter group are former Tomahawks Kenny Britt, Damien O’Malveney and Ben Kelly, all of whom are planning a return to the AMNRL in 2012. Britt and O’Malveney were on the victorious USA side that won the Atlantic Cup in 2010, but then missed the 2011 season as both were attached to clubs that broke away from the AMNRL.
The veteran Kelly played for the USA in the Rugby League World Cup qualifier against Samoa in 2008. Prior to that game he suited up against Australia in the one-off test in 2004 and was on the Tomahawks squad that toured down under in the early 2000s.
Kelly and O’Malveney are in the process of determining which club to join for the 2012 domestic season, although as they’re running the AMNRL‘s new High Performance Academy in Connecticut another option is to start up an expansion team to play in the Atlantic Conference.
As for Britt, he and Tomahawks captain Apple Pope are working out details that would potentially see them leave Jacksonville, FL, for the AMNRL’s new southeast team Atlanta Legion.
“Not too sure what exactly is going to happen,” Britt tells WeAreRugby. “I did retire from the [Jacksonville] Axemen and I am excited to see what the future holds. I would love to get back into a Tomahawks jumper.”
Atlanta has already attracted Tomahawk Salesi Tongamoa and former USA rugby international Phil Thiel, both of whom have been named in the player pool.
Likewise, another ex-USA Eagle Vaha Esikia is in the pool. Esikia operates the Las Vegas Rugby Academy and is one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Las Vegas Warriors club to be part of the AMNRL’s new Western Conference.
