EXCLUSIVE MEDIA AGREEMENT COMPLETES NETWORK’S
“The addition of the Stobart Super League, Carnegie Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge completes our full rugby league portfolio,” said Joshua Glassel, Vice President of Programming & Acquisitions for FOX Soccer and FOX Soccer Plus. “Combined with our coverage of Australia’s National Rugby League, we now have a full lineup of the world’s premier rugby league competitions, including the annual battle for global bragging rights with the World Club Challenge.”
Coverage of the Stobart Super League begins on FOX Soccer Plus when Huddersfield hosts Castleford at 3:55 p.m. ET on Friday, March 16. The action continues on Saturday, March 17, as Bradford squares off against historic power St. Helens at 6:00 p.m. ET.
Founded in 1996, the Stobart Super League season begins in February and lasts until October. The competition consists of 27 rounds followed by an eight-team playoff system that determines entrants for the highly-coveted Super League Grand Final. This event is played annually at Old Trafford in Manchester. St. Helens, Bradford, Wigan and Leeds have been the dominant Super League clubs over the years, with the latter winning more Grand Finals than any other team (five).
The Super League champion plays the winner of Australia’s National Rugby League each year in the World Club Challenge to mark the beginning of a new campaign. Leeds recently defeated Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles to claim the 2012 title.
The Carnegie Challenge Cup is one the United Kingdom’s largest sporting events, with more than 110 years of history and tradition. This knockout tournament is contested between rugby league sides from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Russia. The first round of the Challenge Cup takes place at the beginning of February, with the final hosted at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium in August. Wigan Warriors are the current title holders after defeating Leeds in August of 2011.
