Round 6 of the American National Rugby League’s Atlantic Conference is coming our way this weekend and our Game of the Week features the #2 Pennsylvania Bulls at home to #3 Connecticut Wildcats.
The Bulls (4-1) are on 21 points in the standings, while the Cats (3-2) check in with 18 points and both are breathing down the neck of the first placed New York Knights (4-1) on 22 points.
In their previous meeting this season, the Wildcats posted a 20-point victory on opening day, but since then the Bulls are unbeaten whereas the Cats have lost twice.
On paper at least, this one looks to be very competitive. Both teams have two players in the AMNRL’s top 10 point-scorers and each has its own strike weapons.
Chief among them is Connecticut’s Mike Goward who heads the league’s try-scorers list with 13 so far in 2012, while the best for the Bulls is Alejandro Valentin with six.
Each team also has its USA Tomahawks - veterans Curtis Cunz and Salesi Tongamoa, along with Matt Walsh on the Cats’ team, and Andrew Kniesly and Louis Tulio from Pennsylvania.
Both teams are past AMNRL champions and both are looking to make it back to the championship game in 2012 and with just a few short weeks until we hit the opening round of the playoffs every game counts.
Given that the Bulls are at home Saturday, a venue where they have yet to be beaten this season, combined with the fact that Connecticut hasn’t been able to string together more than two straight wins, the home team will go into this contest as slight favorites.
Other games this weekend see the Knights hosting the Northern Raiders and the Bucks County Sharks on the road at the Northern Virginia Eagles.
As always, make a point of checking back right here this weekend to get the skinny on who won, who lost and who’s still in the hunt for the 2012 AMNRL championship.
