As we reported at the weekend, the USA Tomahawks regained the Donnybrook Cup with a convincing 38-20 victory over Ireland. The result saw the home team extend its dominance over the Irish by improving to 5-3 in their all-time head to head competition.
After the dust had settled, the AMNRL's Damian Flint caught up with both teams for Q&As.
Ireland Coach Gerard Corcoran
What can you take out of the game?
A lot of positives, there were a lot of debutants - inexperienced young kids that play in the domestic comp back home, so it’s a big step up to play international no matter what level you play at. I’m proud of the boys every one of them. A few decisions they made I’ll question, but hats off to the boys and hats off to the American Team for playing a great structure and game plan.
It was quite warm, did the weather hamper the performance at all?
I think so. As the game went on we said we wanted play the game on our terms, but it got away from us.
Your 5/8 Carmody gave the boys a bit of trouble early on. What’s his background and what do you expect out of him in the future?
He’s a good kid Sean and has got some good individual skills, but he has to bring more to the table. He’s been involved with the senior team but we need more leadership out of him when he comes down. He’s got the potential.
What were your thoughts of the American team?
Great, they’ve some good structure and the coaches have done really well. They’ve got some good talent there and are looking good for the future?
Tomahawks Captain Apple Pope
You must be pretty happy with that performance?
Yeah, you know the boys came out and we had a shaky first half, but in the second half we stuck to the game plan and we did the things we needed to win so a win’s a win and I’m excited we got it done.
You had a couple of good performances, obviously 5/8 Luke Hume got a couple of tries and was able to put together some good passes and Akarika Dawn looked good on debut. What are your thoughts on those players?
Both of them are great quality players and we’re very lucky to have them on the team for this game. We obviously welcomed them along. They did exactly what they needed to do. We knew Akarika could run good lines and a man his size out in the centers would be difficult to stop. Luke knew that too and got him the ball and that was that!
You said before the match that one of your goals for this game was to develop your systems and organization. Did you end up accomplishing that?
You know, like I said in the first half we didn’t get things done like we needed to get done, but we had a good chat in the locker room at halftime and were focused our game plan and we did get our organization done and we developed the things we needed to for this game.
So what’s next for the Tomahawks?
The next thing we’ve got is an international in June in Hawaii against Tonga so we obviously need to develop from this game and look at the film really and see what we did right and what we did wrong and go from there.
