NRL STAR TO COACH HAWAII!
Excitement continues to build for the Hawaiian Allstars v Queensland Indigenous match to be played in Oahu, Hawaii on Saturday, October 27 as NRL star Cory Paterson agrees to coach the Hawaiian representative team. Patterson has been a dynamic force playing in the NRL with Newcastle Knights and the North Queensland Cowboys until recently signing on with Hull Kingston Rovers in Super League Europe. Three times he has been voted on to the Indienous Allstars Team to play the NRL Allstars in the annual NRL pre season celebration and also represented the Australian Prime Ministers XIII v Papua New Guinea. Rugby League is not the only sport that the naturally gifted athlete has pursued. He is currently preparing for a professional boxing bout, fighting out of the same gym and management with close friends and rugby superstars, Anthony Mundine and Sonny Bill Williams. No stranger to the USA, Cory recently visited with a number of NFL clubs to tryout as a punter and almost signed with the Oakland Raiders.
The tour of the Indigenous Squad is sure to create long lasting relationships between both organizations and players. Whilst rugby league will be the core focus, a signicant element of the tour will be a cultural exchange between the Aboriginal Dance Troupe traveling with the squad and the vast Polynesian Community in Hawaii. Details of the Dance Troupe performances will be announced soon.
Another exciting announcement is that the event will be presented in partnership with the Hawaiian Gridiron League (HGL), with the curtain raiser to the rugby league international being the HGL Allstar Game. Kickoff times are to be announced with the games scheduled to be played Kaiser Stadium, the venue that hosted the 'Ohana Cup in May between the USA and Tonga. A huge crowd is expected to turn out to enjoy a feast of rugby league and American Football action that will be captured by a television crew following the tour with Indigenous TV from Australia.
The event will be an exciting opportunity for Hawaiian sports fans to enjoy first hand the dynamic skills of the Indigenous players along with the rising standard of local rugby athletes as rugby league continues to take hold in the region.
Cory will be visiting Hawaii with his family. Follow his experience with Rugby League in the USA and his time with the Hawaii squad in Oahu on Twitter at @corypaterson12
