AUCKLAND METROPOLITAN POLICE BRING A GAME TO AMNRL GRAND FINAL XI
The Auckland Metropolitan Police were too strong for an AMNRL ALLSTAR Squad in the curtain raiser for the Grand Final at Fort Dix. Whilst the Allstar Squad had plenty of opportunities to score points it was the Police team that had the better of the scoreboard and the run of play for much of the game.
The Allstars featured a number of returning players from retirement to honor the development of Rugby League in America with Jeff Preston, Shayne Mains, Ryan McGough, Ben Kelly and a host of other club stalwarts taking on a much younger Police team.
It was a fiery encounter that threatened to blow up on a number of occasions with tempers flaring as players struggled with some poor refereeing and both teams a little uncertain of the game theme. It was obvious the Allstars were treating the game as an exhibition whilst their rivals seemed more interested in taking bodies back downunder as they came up with some unfortunate incidents that led to sin bin offences against some of their personnel.
The second half settled down somewhat and with the Allstars losing a couple of players to injury and event commitments the Police team ran out convincing victors.
