USA TOMAHAWKS
DEVELOPMENTAL SQUAD
TOUR OF AUSTRALIA
JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2005
To further develop the playing talent and expanding Rugby League competition
in the USA, the American National Rugby League is sending an Emerging USA
Tomahawks Squad on a developmental tour of Australia, with matches in country
regions of Northern New South Wales and South East Queensland.
Following on from a strong performance in Philadelphia against the Australian Kangaroos, the American National Rugby League is looking to improve and develop further an emerging pool of young players in the USA.
In preparation for the home international against Ireland in March, and prior to the domestic season kickoff in May, this developmental tour will provide a tremendous opportunity for the growing pool of elite young players in the USA to experience Rugby League in Australia, and continue to improve the standard of the national team at the international level.
Whilst on tour the Tomahawks will play: -
• Sat/Sun, Jan 22/23 at Orara Valley Sevens (hosted by Russell Crowe)
• Wednesday, Jan 26 v Coast and Valley Group 2 Representative Squad (hosted by Russell Crowe)
• Saturday, Jan 29 v Runaway Bay RLFC at Runaway Bay
• Tuesday, Feb 1 v Casino RLFC at Casino
• Thursday, Feb 3 v Tugan Seahawks RLFC at Tugan
• Saturday, Feb 5 v Tweed Heads RLFC at Lismore (curtain raiser to Parramatta v Cronulla NRL Pre Season Trial)
The Emerging Tomahawks Squad will be comprised of young players with an average age of twenty one led by Ian Blake from Texas who recently signed with the Brisbane Broncos, and feature elusive winger Nate Smith from the University of Louisville who is likely to sign with an English Super League Club this season. The squad will be supported by a number of seasoned veterans such as Brandon Costin and Steele Retchless who qualify to represent the USA via grandparents, to help guide the emerging squad of Americans in a number of matches.
John Cartwright and Shane Millard will coach the squad, and will be looking to maintain the improving standard of Rugby League in America to maintain their goal for the USA Tomahawks to participate in the next Rugby League World Cup.
