Fallen mates honored in the Remembrance Cup

by Jeff Rogg

As a curtain raise to the Liberty Bell Cup two top club sides will meet in the Remembrance Cup. This match will feature the Coogee Dolphins of New South Wales, Australia and the Glen Mills Bulls of Glen Mills, Pa. The Coogee Dolphins, formed in 1993, fields both junior and reserve grade teams. Out of their junior grades they produce players who go on to play in the NRL. Excited by the chance to play in America, they will be ready to go when they take the field against the home team.

The Glen Mills Bulls have consistently been one of the leading teams of the AMNRL. They are the 2004 winners of the C.D. Ferrainola Cup and have recently honed their skills in a game with another Australian side, the Wyong Roos. In front of a crowd that will include the almost one thousand students of The Glen Mills Schools, the “battling” Bulls will look for a hard-fought victory.

The Remembrance Cup is a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks and the Bali Tragedy of October 12, 2002, along with our fighting men and women overseas. This cup has a particular significance to the Dolphins. They lost six members of their touring side:

Clint Thompson - CT -------- 6 - Club President, Player
Adam Howard - Big Ads-- 10 - Club Secretary, Player
Dave Mavroudis - Mav------- 5 - Club Treasurer, Player
Shane Foley - Shaggy------ 8 - Club Trainer, Player
Gerard Yeo - Cup Cake---- 3 - Player
Joshua Iliffe – King----------- 4 - Player

The Coogee team has incorporated their numbers onto their Dolphin logo. As the Dolphins’ fight song ends “…most of all we love being with our mates.” They will play in the Remembrance Cup to honor the memory of their mates.

Glen Mills is proud to take the field with the presence their own Alex Plowman. Alex has played for the Bulls for 5 years. During this time he was a well-trained reservist for 6 years for the Marine Corps Reserve Unit of Folsom, Pennsylvania. He and other members of his unit volunteered to assist the city of New York in coping with the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. With many family members living in New York, the tragedy really struck him in the heart.

In 2003, Alex joined the Wilmington, Delaware Reserve Unit that was recently activated to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Alex was deployed for 7 months and he credits his family, including his extended family of the Glen Mills Bulls RLFC, for supporting him with letters, prayers, and packages during his time overseas. When he returned, he could not wait to jump back into the sport of rugby league. “We train together, play together, and grow together…much like the ways of the Marine Corps,” says Alex. Since then Alex has stood out in many matches for Glen Mills, cherishing the opportunity to “play alongside the men that helped me through some of the toughest times of my life.” Alex and the Glen Mills Bulls will take to the field in honor of the victims of 9/11 and our fighting men and women overseas. Alex is a credit to the Glen Mills team. Fans can look forward to a good match prior to the main event.
