American National Rugby League News

Field of Dreams

by Jennifer Horan

“Build it, and they will come!” The famous line from the movie The Field of Dreams seems to hold a special meaning to the USA Tomahawks and the American National Rugby League. Just as Kevin Costner’s character saw something no one else could see, David Niu and the men involved in the AMNRL are trying to make their dream come true. Their dream, you ask? Bring Rugby League to America and send it right into the middle of the American athletic scene!

Although there have been some sightings of Rugby League in our area over the past several years, perhaps November 30th will be their biggest moment yet! The USA Tomahawks will host Australia’s Kangaroos next Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus in Philadelphia.

The evening promises to be exciting from start to finish. There will be matches starting at 5:00p.m, leading up to the feature match at 7:30p.m. It is a great chance to come out with the family and see what rugby league is all about. Be prepared to see non-stop action from both sides. The Kangaroos are internationally ranked in Rugby League and will be the Tomahawks’ toughest opponent thus far.

The Tomahawks are honored to have members of the military involved in the evening’s festivities. Sherri Jones, Public Affairs Officer for Willow Grove Air Base, was pleased to receive the invitation from the AMNRL. Members of the base will join the Tomahawks in a pre-game ceremony guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings. During these troubled times in the world, it is fitting to join with another country on a playing field and honor the men and women who provide this country and the world with service and protection. When I asked Ms. Jones to share her feeling about the military’s involvement she wrote, "The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Willow Grove is proud to send military personnel from all branches of the services, which are co-located here, to this type of event. It is gratifying to know that the public, in particular, the USA Tomahawks, are willing to show their support of the men and women of the Armed Forces." The AMNRL appreciates their willingness to be a part of the evening and to share in our vision of honoring those who serve.

Thank you to Ms. Jones and the men and women of the Armed Forces. Mark next Tuesday, November 30th on your calendar. Come down to Franklin Field to witness the match between the USA Tomahawks and the Australia Kangaroos. Bring the family or make it a night out with friends…it’s a perfect combination…a healthy serving of some hard-hitting Rugby League, mixed with the ambience of the awesome city of Philadelphia, with a splash of American pride and patriotism. The AMNRL and the USA Tomahawks look forward to seeing you there - - old faithful fans and new curious spectators. You will not be disappointed! See you at the match - -
