The Connecticut local derby clash between the New Haven Warriors and the Connecticut Wildcats entertained an excited crowd as the sun went down over East shore park on Friday night. The Wildcats showed why they are the current National Champions by scoring the first two tries consecutively due to a lapse in the Warriors defensive line. The two forward packs did battle all day with the physical Warriors dominating the Wildcats. The Wildcats decisively took advantage of some early mistakes by the Warriors, and their strong defensive line held the Warriors to only one try in the 1 st half by Captain and 5/8 on the day Siose Muliumu. leading by example Muliumu proved why he is the 2006 MVP by scoring at will with an additional 3 tries in the 2 nd half. Unfortunately back up kicker Carrick Pell was unable to convert all 3 of Muliumu’s try’s closing the gap slightly on the Cats 32-22.
With 20 minutes remaining and the Warriors still down on the score board Leon Noel a new recruit from Yale University touched down in the far right corner out stepping his opposite and Cats 2 nd rower Curtis Cunz. Unfortunately Noel’s try has since turned out to be a topic of controversy between the two clubs. Conversion was unsuccessful. Score board now 32-26 to the Cats and 8 minutes remaining.
Only when it appeared the Cats would take another victory over their state rivals the Warriors, lock and native New Zealander Ewen Robinson broke the Cats line in the Warriors half and side stepped three Cats defenders to sprint 60 yards to the posts. Score 32-30. Acknowledgements go to the Warriors squad for an outstanding 2 nd half come back, and to new comers from Providence Rhode Island, Derrick Roma, Eric Gonzales, and hooker Phil Lord who hails from the UK.
With only 1 regular season match left against the New York Knights this coming Friday night, the Warriors are merging as strong contender’s for the semi’s and possibly the grand final in Jacksonville, Florida August 25.
