National Rugby League News | Bulls
run wild through the streets of Philadelphia
Glen
Mills started their stampede for the C.D. Ferrainola Cup by running over an always
determined Philadelphia Fight at Jack Pearson Stadium on Saturday Night. The Bulls
playing without Carl Barr, (out for the season) Cory Sheridan and Chris McGuirk
still showed plenty of size and speed to change gears on Philadelphia anytime
they showed a glimpse of coming back into the game. The
Bulls began the game in typical fashion scoring three easy tries in the opening
10 minutes and it looked as if was going to be a long and painful night for the
younger and less experienced Fight. To their credit Philadelphia didn't panic
and their defense dug deep holding out the Bulls onslaught and they continued
to attack the Fight end zone. The
Fight had scoring plans of their own and a quick penalty saw them deep in Bulls
territory and score the first of two tries with Louis Tulio diving over the line
from dummy half. The second try from Jeff Preston placing them back in the game
and only down 24 - 12 going into the second half. The
second half was well dominated by the Bulls as they threw the ball from side to
side with sensational performances from Ben Shaw, Michael Tesoriero and Erik Hollingsworth
all running wild in the backline. Pat McShea, Marcus Vassilakopoulos and Mike
Edwards provided plenty of movement in the forwards with continual damaging bursts
through the tired and over worked Philadelphia defense that soon opened the flood
gates to flurry of Gold and Black tries. Although the Fight managed to score twice
in the second half with gutsy performances by Louis Tulio, Joe Kellar and Jeff
Preston it was never enough as Bulls were too much class on the day.
Injuries
to Glen Mills key players Shayne Mains (32 stitches forehead) and Ben Shaw (Ribs)
caused concern for Coach Bill Hansbury as both players left the field but should
be back next week for the Semi Finals. Philadelphia
should not be disappointed with their efforts as they have improved greatly throughout
the year despite suffering long term injuries to key players. The Fight have already
unearthed young talented players for next season and will do well if they can
add a couple of big forwards to share the workload.
The
Bulls will now head to the Levittown this Saturday to face a well rested but fired
up New Jersey Sharks with the winner advancing to the Grand Final. The game a
repeat of last years Semi Final should provide plenty of excitement as these two
rivals do battle yet again with New Jersey keen to make up for last years narrow
loss. Final
Score: Glen Mills Bulls 58 defeated Philadelphia Fight 24
