avoid a Fight to take out 2nd Top Seed
New
Jersey Sharks held off a determined Philadelphia Fight in the 8th and Final Round
to secure home field and a bye for the first week of the Playoffs. The
Sharks playing host to the Fight under the lights in Levitown, started the game
in excellent form by scoring quickly through some very soft Philadelphia defense.
This continued as Phil Shipos found the line again after Zac Padgett held off
three defenders to offload a clever pass in the quick wingers hands. The
Fight took longer to settle in and after a number of attacking raids by the Sharks
were able to counter attack through some barnstorming runs by Jeff Preston, Rocco
& Joe Kellar. Tries to Philadelphia's Jeff Preston & Stefan Helleringer
were enough to see the Fight only down by 12 at the end of the first half. Philadelphia
started the second half in better form with a fine display of end to end passing
followed by solid defense when it was the Sharks turn to attack. At one point
the Fight had climbed within 6 points after a number of quick tries but the Sharks
with too much skill changed gears in the final few minutes and breezed past a
tired Philadelphia. Philadelphia
will take plenty away from the game as they face an in form Glen Mills Bulls at
GMS next week for the first elimination Round of the playoffs. The
Sharks win gives them the weeks rest but they will need to improve greatly from
Thursday night allowing the Fight to get back into the game. Coach White commented
"We need to improve in the forwards and the return of Justin Zadnik should
add some spark in our forward pack", he continued "The boys didn't play
all that well tonight and we will need to be 100% ready as we don;t want a repeat
of last years disappointment.
