CATS MAUL KNIGHTS 50-20 TO RETAIN DESERTERS’ CUP
The Connecticut Wildcats remained purrfect against the New York Knights in decided fashion, once again completing a season sweep.
The first half saw the Cats apply a bit of pressure and outscore the Knights 4 tries to 2. Scoring for the Wildcats were Ban “Hitman” Mathers, Sean Byrne, Greg Stelluti and Mick “Mole” Mulvihill. For the Knights were the ancient warrior Robert Balachandran and former Georgian Rugby International and League debutant Levon earned his first of two on the day (half-time Cats 20-10).
The second-half was not so kind to the Knights, who were playing without the likes of USA Tomahawks Christian “Rock” Rahui and Matt Astill. The Cats poured in 30 points on tries from the Mole (7), “Hitman” Mathers (4); Gareth “Mr. Carlton”, and Nate “Seabiscuit” Smith (5). Mulvihill converted 7 from 9 to bring the score-line to 50-20 at full-time. Best for the Knights were half-back Craig and big Chris Martin, while the Cats were led by the Mathers’ brothers in defense and a runaway freight train in the form of Greg Stelluti. USA Tomahawk Rich Portale debuted at hooker for the Wildcats, as last year’s stalwart Dave Lloyd is expected to miss the rest of the season with a broken thumb. The Wildcats look to return to form in the coming weeks, as they welcome back Will Brazier and Tomahawks’ Danny Bull and Mike McGeachy from injury and 2003 phenom “Sir” Lawrence Raleigh who has finished his professional commitments in France.
The Knights picked up a bonus point to bring them to 7 on the season, while the Cats nabbed 5 to reach 17 total points and a share of second place overall with the DC Slayers. The Cats look to pounce on League Leaders Glen Mills Bulls with matches this week against the Sharks and Slayers at the War at the Shore.
