Week Five produced some exciting Rugby League in both conferences with the New Jersey Sharks pulling off the upset of the round in a nailbiting victory over the DC Slayers.
Whilst most fans expected the Slayers to account for the Sharks at Shark Park, the New Jersey squad pulled out the biggest shock of the season thus far, scoring a try with time running out to secure an exciting 38-32 win at home, that puts the Sharks right back in contention in the Franklin Conference.
The Slayers have been the form team of the competition and fully expected a tough match from the Sharks but didn't count on how tough the Sharks are at home. Having beaten the Sharks soundly in the opening round the Slayers were confident of remaining unbeaten. Although holding a handy first half lead of 16-6, the Slayers could not put the Sharks away and paid dearly for not capitalizing on numerous opportunities to advance the lead. The Sharks will no doubt benefit from this big win and look to consolidate their position in future matches.
The Philadelphia Fight continued to improve with a convincing 46-16 victory of the Delaware Mantarays at Torresdale Boys Club. The Mantarays fought hard throughout but could not contain the power and speed of the Fight with Conway Maraki, Jeff Preston, and Louis Tulio leading the way.
The Mantarays lost Tomahawks International Dave Divalerio in the first tackle of the match to a nose injury and his loss proved vital to their chances. Tim Griffiths and Fred Gruhler tried hard all night for the Mantarays but it not enough to leave them winless for 2004.
The Connecticut Wildcats swamped the Northern Raiders in a local derby in Norwalk, CT by 60-38. The young Raiders showed plenty of determination in pushing the 2003 Champions all the way, only fading in the final quarter to a strong Wildcats lineup. With Danny Bull returning to the field after a hamstring injury the Wildcats will be looking to finish strong in the back half of the season to to take top spot in the Lincoln Conference playoff series.
