Wildcats keep Rolling
Washington DC – June 16, 2007. It was a picture-perfect day in our Nation’s capital and the many fans on hand enjoyed a great test of Rugby League between 2006 Champion Connecticut Wildcats and host DC Slayers. The Slayers came out hard, in the shadows of the Washington Monument and the massive National Bureau of Archives, holding the Cats scoreless for the first 20 minutes to take an early lead, as Martin O’Donohue touched down in the corner after he sliced through a gap in the Wildcats’ line. (Slayers 6-0)
But the Cats sprung to life and ran in 5 tries before the half-time, including some super individual efforts from Damien O’Malveney, Matt Pitman and Danny Bull. (Cats 28-6). The second half was more evenly played, but marred by two dust-ups and a near bench-clearing brawl. The Slayers once again punched through first, but the Cats outscored them 3 tries to two in the half and came away with five points in the standings to keep pace with the Bulls for first place in the table. Man of the match for the Wildcats was youngster Nick Isbrandtsen (Junior Webby), who was a powerhouse all day. Martin O’Donohue was deserving of the honor for Slayers.
The Cats face the Knights on Friday Night in the “Castle” in NYC, while the Slayers dropped out of a 3-way first place tie. They travel to rival Jacksonville next week. (Final – Cats 42-18)
