WILDCATS AND BRAVES TEAM UP TO BEAT MONSOON
June 3, 2006 – In a torrid rain and windstorm, the two teams clashed at Saunders Stadium, home of AMNRL debutant Boston Braves. 2005 runners-up Connecticut Wildcats relied on a bit of experience in sloppy conditions, however, and were able to manage the slick ball and windy conditions; as turnovers proved to be the key to this battle.
After trading sets for the first few minutes, the Cats’ lock Curtis Cunz hammered his way thru the heart of the Braves defensive line from 10 out, and the Wildcats never looked back. Ben Kelly was in next for two in a row and to put the score up to 18-0. The Braves fought valiantly behind Steven Flaherty and Corey Naschunstreit, but were unable to cross the Wildcats’ line in their first ever AMNRL match.
Curtis Cunz’s two scores and tireless work-rate on both sides of the ball earned him Man of the Match Honors for the Cats, with Michael McGeachy and Ata Izrahbahki close behind in the voting. Also for the Wildcats - Nathan Hollingsworth scored from dummy half, Topher Scheel barreled over and Danny Bull touched down a quiet three, as he does.
Wildcats’ CEO Rich Portale, “Credit goes out to Jim Walker and Todd Stone for their effort in bringing Boston into the AMNRL. The venue and the Braves themselves were all class and the AMNRL is glad to have them aboard.” The Cats took five points on the day and face the Warriors next week, who lost a tough one at home to the Knights 22-10. T he Braves look for their first win next week against the Northern Raiders.
