The Jacksonville Axemen will hold a 3 day training camp to select the 2007 playing roster.
After the success of the 2006 campaign that seen the Axemen make the playoff rounds in their first season, interest has been high and continued during the off season. The Axemen will hold this training camp to allow any interested player to try out for the squad.
With many Rugby Union players having the summer season off in Florida and many high school and college football players having limited opportunity for contact sports, the Axemen feel that among them could lurk some great Rugby League talent.
The camp will start on Friday May 4th and continue over the Sat and Sun with sessions designed to find the best each player has to offer. They plan on the usual skills and general play drills and will also put in some strength and conditioning work as well.
The team will stay together for the entire weekend with out of town players staying with locals to build team camaraderie and to ensure that every player is putting in the same time. The camp will not be all tough as nails sessions and some of the time will be spent at some of the Axemen sponsors venues such as Fionn MacCools and Walkabout Cafe.
Coach Spinner Howland, said that he expects all the players to approach this camp as if a full professional contract was riding on it. "We have the Rugby League World Cup qualifiers this year and if any of the Axemen players think they are a chance to pull on the Stars and Stripes Jersey they had better show up to this camp "switched on".
More details will be released about the full schedule soon.
