New York Scores
With Youth Rugby

ASAS NY's latest venture, a much-needed after-school program at M.S. 74 in Queens, has quickly become a hit with students, parents, and educators. "It has something for everyone," says Assistant Principal Anthony Armstrong. "This program came at a time when parents were reaching out and asking for it. Students love the activities. And, teachers and counselors have definitely noticed positive changes in the kids who attend."

The program was made possible by the American National Rugby League (AMNRL), which partnered with ASAS last fall to introduce a rugby league into two New York middle schools, M.S. 74 and I.S. 237. Although none of the kids who participate had any previous experience with a rugby league, it has proven to be a big draw for both existing athletes and those who previously shied away from athletics.

The program features a flag version of rugby league play. Teams spent the first few weeks learning the rules and are now competing in scrimmage games. AMNRL representatives have worked closely with ASAS staff to develop the program, and a professional AMNRL player is on-hand two days a week to help with training and coaching. "We are thrilled to be able to share our sport and benefit kids, and we're excited about the possibility of expanding to more locations in the future," says David Niu, AMNRL's chief executive.

Students who sign up for the rugby league agree to forfeit their eligibility to play if they do not maintain passing grades in school. This academic incentive policy has been successful. "Kids want to play. They love the sport so they keep their grades up," says Program Coordinator Jonathan Guerrero. At the end of the first term, only two students had to be suspended. Both have signed up for extra help to raise their grades.

On March 12, 20 youth rugby league players will travel to Philadelphia to participate in a tournament with other AMNRL youth teams. The following week players from M.S. 74 and I.S. 237 will meet for an ASAS championship game at St. John's University.
